The initial phase of the Civil Service selection process involves two key tests: the Physical Agility Examination and the Written Examination. The Physical Agility Examination, mandated by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA), assesses candidates’ physical fitness and is the first step in determining eligibility. Candidates receive immediate results after the exam, and those who pass proceed to the Written Examination. The Written Examination, also required by the ILEA, evaluates candidates’ knowledge in relevant areas. Successful candidates scoring 70% or above in each section of the exam advance to the next phase. Notably, certified peace officers through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy are exempt from both examinations. The physical test includes a 1 ½ mile run, maximum pushups in a minute, and maximum sit-ups in a minute. The Iowa Law Enforcement Academy uses the Cooper standards to find qualifying times and repetitions.
